Hailey 💛 :
I am a PhD researching extremophiles, that is microorganisms that grow under extreme conditions (including extreme temperature, pH, salinity, etc). My specialty is marine hyperthermophiles, which are organisms that grow over 80°C, with my main organism (Pyrococcus furiousus) growing best at 100°C (212°F). Places like the lost city are teeming with this sort of life! OP was correct, we look to these places and the life there to provide insight into early life on Earth. We can also harness these extreme organisms in biotechnology, as they can do cool shit in conditions that kill everything else! I highly recommend going down this rabbit hole if you're at all interested, but I have chosen to dedicate my entire life to it, so maybe I'm biased ;)
My favorite open access academic journals for this niche are through the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), especially Applied and Environmental Microbiology (AEM). Their editors do a good job ensuring there are sections written in plain enough language for non-scientists to approach. Also look for review papers if you want a more diverse and interesting read!
sincerely, a dork ass scientist that loves weird microorganisms 💛💛💛

So you're saying the milky sea isn't caused by bioluminescence.. but it's caused by bioluminescent bacteria.
