Whether written just before or shortly after AD 70, Mark's Gospel presents Jesus as the promised Messiah, the Son of God, whose mission was to proclaim God's kingdom, suffer, die for sinners, and rise again.

Jesus' preaching in Galilee centered on the arrival of God's kingdom and calling people to respond in faith. In Gospel of Mark 1:14–15, after John the Baptist was arrested, Jesus began preaching: "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe in the gospel." His message in Galilee included: The Kingdom of God has come near — God's reign was breaking into history through Jesus. Repent — Turn away from sin and return to God. Believe the good news — Trust in God's plan of salvation through Jesus. Call people to follow Him — He invited disciples to leave their old lives and become "fishers of men" (Mark 1:16–20). Teach with authority — He explained God's will, corrected misunderstandings, and fulfilled the Scriptures. Heal the sick and cast out demons — These miracles demonstrated that God's kingdom had authority over sickness, evil, and death (Mark 1:21–45).
