Are you squeezing your voice… or letting too much air escape? Not all vocal fold closure is the same. Healthy singing depends on finding balanced phonation—the point where the vocal folds meet with enough closure to vibrate efficiently, but without unnecessary muscular compression. 🔴 Pressed phonation Excessive activation of the adductor muscles (primarily the lateral cricoarytenoid and interarytenoid) compresses the vocal folds too firmly. This increases collision forces during vibration, often producing a tight, strained sound and increasing vocal effort. 🔵 Breathy phonation The vocal folds don’t adduct sufficiently, leaving a gap during vibration. Excess airflow escapes through the glottis, resulting in an airy tone, reduced acoustic efficiency, and less vocal carrying power. 🟢 Balanced phonation The vocal folds adduct with just enough medial compression to maintain efficient vibration. The mucosal wave remains free, airflow is used efficiently, and the result is a clear, resonant sound with minimal unnecessary effort. The goal isn’t to squeeze the vocal folds together or let them leak air—it’s to develop efficient coordination between airflow, vocal fold closure, and laryngeal muscle activity.
