Worker honey bees are extremely clean and avoid defecating inside the hive under normal conditions. Instead, they hold their feces in the rectum and wait for suitable flying weather to take “cleansing flights” and poop outside. In winter, they can hold it for weeks or even a couple of months, depending on conditions. How bees handle poop in normal weather • Adult worker bees do not use the comb as a bathroom; feces in the brood nest is a red flag for disease or severe stress. • On warm days, bees fly out, quickly defecate in the air or on nearby surfaces, then return, keeping the interior of the hive clean and sanitary. How they hold it in winter • In cold climates, bees form a tight winter cluster and stay inside for long stretches when it is too cold to fly safely. • During these stretches, they store feces in a greatly distended rectum, which can take up a large part of the abdomen, allowing them to “hold it” for weeks. • They metabolize honey for heat and energy, but the indigestible wastes from their diet accumulate slowly, so they can go a surprisingly long time without defecating. Cleansing flights • When there is a warm spell (often around 45–50°F or higher with low wind), bees break cluster, pour out of the hive, and take short flights specifically to defecate—these are “cleansing flights.” • You’ll see or find yellow/brown spots on snow, hive fronts, and nearby objects after these days; that’s normal and healthy. • If they go too long without a chance for cleansing flights, the rectum can become overfull, which stresses the bees and can contribute to issues like dysentery or make diseases such as nosema worse. #bee #honeybee #apiary #beekeeper #beehive
