Can’t believe someone would delete everything. If you care to check - you can see sign-in logs and general activity logs that may show time stamps and location of when it was accessed/deleted. Very curious if he stored any passwords in Google’s password manager or something similar as well.

Do you know anyone “techy?” If so, they might be able to retrieve those emails from the cloud. You know how they say the internet is forever….yeah, well it is my understanding that items deleted online are never truly deleted. If you don’t personally know anyone, you could probably just google computer repair and find someone to retrieve them.
