“Dagger” was written during the time Neil Halstead and Rachel Goswell's relationship was falling apart. Since they were not only the two main members of Slowdive but also a couple, that heartbreak naturally found its way into Souvlaki, and “Dagger” became its most personal moment. Instead of blaming Rachel, Neil seems to blame himself. Calling himself a “dagger” and a “wound” suggests he saw himself as someone who loved her but also caused her pain. The song is full of guilt and emotional exhaustion rather than anger. The “sunshine girl” can be seen as Rachel—someone warm and full of light—while Neil sees himself as the opposite, someone who hurts the person he loves.
