I had a shirt that said “Otakus unite” when I was in middle school that I bought from an anime convention. My brother called me an “Old taco”. This was in the early 2000s.

see I called myself an otaku in college to a old couple who used to live in Japan, and a classmate of mine pulled me aside and said "that's a derogatory term in Japan" and I was so distressed. I'm so glad to hear that in Japan its not. they told me it made me sound like a hentai obssessed maniac. which tbf I was, but I didn't want to publicly call myself that (I'm just a regular old otaku, now that the teen hormones have calmed down lol)
