I think there’s nuance to this. It isn’t just that it brought more people- it diversified the fan base. Suddenly their identity as DnD fans was threatened because it was a largely white cis male group. But now there is diversity and expectation of civility and respect within a community that used to frankly, use this game system as a way of playing out murderhobo/problematic stereotypes and fantasies.

tbh the only "mercer effect" that happened to me is that him + cr encouraged me to be more openly nerdy + weird and I found a dnd group + friend group that way!

I literally got YELLED (after a very emotional moment for my character cuz I tried to play her a little bit more in that moment) and had to leave cuz I didn’t felt safe in the space of a campaign that I joined and was part of for MORE THAN HALF A YEAR. The group HATED critical role (already a red flag in my opinion) cuz they said they RUINED DND. So I get what you are saying

D&D is a game. The sole objective of it is to have fun. Are you playing it and having fun? Good. That’s all anyone needs to worry about.

I’ve been wanting to get into dnd and other ttrpgs for a while and critical role, their shows, and anime using a d&d type of world really inspired me to try and really get into it. I’m trying out some one pager light rules ttrpgs I found to get into the headspace but I want to get into d&d later as well. The reason a lot of people my age (young adults)want to get into it is because we want do something fun and immersive where we can create meaningful friendships in a world where in person interactions are decreasing. Also as per what little I’ve seen, as long as everyone agrees to the changes, using house rules is fairly common. I’m so grateful for crit role and other such ips for getting more people to engage in nerdy hobbies because it means more people are realizing how fun this stuff is

Critical Role and other actual plays contributed to a cultural shift in the DnD audience. Conversations are less focused on rules and character creation in exchange for worldbuilding and character writing. There's no need to be rude about it but disliking the shift is valid

I’m currently experiencing this as a Magic the Gathering player (interesting that Hasbro has a hand in both). For context they have been introducing external IP’s starting with The Walking Dead as part of their Universes Beyond product which were mechanically unique products that could only be obtained through their secret lair drops. Over time this has changed and evolved from being format specific (Lord of the Rings was allowed to be in the game from modern forward) to being bonus supplemental cards in-universe magic sets to them having multiple whole sets and or commander decks being released. I will never begrudge or gate keep the game because they found it though these external IP’s: This is also interesting with the announcement that DnD will be introducing both World of Warcraft and Star Wars into DnD at some point in the next year or so
