@the_modern_mortician: Where does the water go after Fireless Cremation® and what happens to the bones? First, the bones do not go down the drain. After the soft tissue has been broken down through hydrolysis, the clean, porous bones remain inside the vessel. The Fireless Cremation® system is designed to retain even small, sand-sized bone fragments rather than losing them with the liquid. The bones are carefully collected, dried, and processed into the fine, sand-like cremains returned to the family in an urn. The remaining liquid is called hydrolysate. It is thin and pourable, more like iced tea without the ice, and contains water, amino acids, peptides, sugars, and salts. The heat, alkalinity, time, and circulation make it sterile, with no recognizable tissue or intact DNA remaining. Most commonly, the hydrolysate is released into the sanitary sewer with approval from the local wastewater authority and treated at a municipal wastewater facility. It is not dumped untreated into rivers, lakes, or the drinking water supply. In some states and at some facilities, the liquid can instead be captured in sealed containers and used as fertilizer for a memorial garden, tree, or other non edible plants. That option depends on state law, local regulations, and the provider’s policies, and the family must follow the facility’s instructions for proper dilution and use.
