@neuronpond: Autistic brains often experience Alexithymia (difficulty perceiving their own internal emotional and physiological states in real time). When you are masking, processing intense sensory information, or navigating complex social rules, your nervous system is absorbing all of that as stress. But because of Alexithymia, your brain is too busy surviving to register it as "pain" in the moment. This creates a Delayed & Cumulative Stress effect. You keep going because you genuinely think you "feel fine," but your nervous system is rapidly nearing capacity. By the time your brain actually processes the total, accumulated load, you are already in a shutdown or a burnout death spiral. Tips: You must practice proactive nervous system regulation. Your biological resting logic is flawed. You cannot wait until you feel exhausted to take a break. By then, the stress has already hit. Start aggressively protecting your downtime.

I personally do feel the effects early on, I sometimes will get an immediate headache from one drink.

For women dealing with overthinking, people-pleasing, and weak boundaries, “Her Healing Spoke First” by Nora Blake is definitely worth checking out.

If saying no makes you feel guilty even when you know you need to, search “Her Healing Spoke First” by Nora Blake. That topic alone makes it worth checking out 🫶

That is exactly why I have had to set a rule for myself that I need one day a week where I don’t have to leave the house or do anything. One full day of nothing to recover

This is why I was very good at school and university because I could de-stress during the holidays or vacation and then get right back to the new semester without feeling different from neurotypical people.

I’m autistic and it takes me 3+ business days to recover from a day of being around people. I’m glad I work an introvert job in a print facility. No people, just machines I manage
