But here’s where the story turns dark. We took this living dinosaur relative and genetically manipulated them to grow faster and bigger... just so we could eat them. Through intense selective breeding, we have created a bird that: 🐓Grows to slaughter weight in 35–42 days (down from 90+ days in the 1950s). That speed comes with a cost: 🐓Often suffers broken legs, deformed joints, and bones that fracture because their muscles outgrow their skeletons. Studies show up to 3 in 10 commercial chickens have trouble walking because of it. 🐓Lives in floor space sometimes equivalent to an A4 sheet of paper per bird. Overcrowding means they can’t exhibit natural behaviours and move normally. 🐓Develops footpad dermatitis ("ammonia burns") from contact from their own waste-soaked litter and it causes lesions and ulcers. 🐓A fast-growing chicken's heart has to pump blood through a much larger body than their lungs are designed to support. This leads to heart problems—including sudden death from heart failure in some birds. So, here's the question. Can we honestly call this chicken "natural" anymore? The USDA says "natural" just means no artificial ingredients. It doesn't say anything about how the animal was raised. When I was little I found two meat chicks that fell out of their moving trucks. I took care of them, and cried when we had to put them out of their misery because they couldn’t walk or live properly without suffering. I didn’t understand what was happening to them at the time.
