On Sep. 14, Neo was on her way home when she was alerted to the bus captain slumped over the door of the driver’s cabin. On September 17, 2023, police entered a home in Romeoville, Illinois, after relatives became concerned they couldn’t reach the family. Inside they found Zoraida Bartolomei, her husband Alberto Rolon, and their two sons, Adriel and Diego, shot to death. Their three dogs had also been killed. Police believed the family had been deliberately targeted. But uncovering why led investigators into an unbelievable story. Zoraida had reportedly been having an affair with coworker Nathaniel Huey Jr. Nathaniel was engaged to Ermalinda Palomo. And according to investigators, Ermalinda knew about the affair. Instead of simply confronting Nathaniel, police say she created fake phone numbers, online accounts and fictional identities to convince him he was communicating with members of a Mexican drug cartel. Nathaniel allegedly came to believe the cartel was real. He was supposedly being watched. His loyalty was being questioned. And eventually, these supposed cartel members identified Zoraida as a “mole” who posed a threat to him. But there was no cartel. Investigators concluded Nathaniel’s own fiancée was behind the messages. And the deception allegedly turned into a murder plan. Police found evidence indicating Nathaniel and Ermalinda researched Zoraida’s home, neighborhood cameras, possible entrances and exits—and even who and what lived inside, including the children and dogs. On the night of the murders, investigators believe Nathaniel entered the family’s home while Ermalinda waited outside. Zoraida was killed. So were Alberto and their two sons. Their three dogs were killed too. Police identified Nathaniel as the shooter and said evidence showed he and Ermalinda communicated during the attack. But investigators didn’t uncover the entire scheme immediately. Nathaniel and Ermalinda were questioned and initially released because police said they didn’t yet have enough evidence to hold them. Then they fled. Three days after the family was discovered, authorities located the couple hundreds of miles away in Oklahoma. A police pursuit followed. Their SUV crashed and caught fire. Inside, authorities found Nathaniel dead from a gunshot wound and Ermalinda critically wounded. She later died. Investigators concluded Nathaniel shot Ermalinda and then himself.
