@the.opus.room: Few composers in history left behind recordings of their own playing. Sergei Rachmaninoff was one of them. Born in 1873, Rachmaninoff was not only one of the greatest composers of the Romantic era. He was also one of the greatest pianists who ever lived. His enormous hands, legendary technique, and unmistakable sound became the standard by which generations of pianists would be judged. Today, these recordings offer something extraordinary: The chance to hear Rachmaninoff as Rachmaninoff intended. Not through interpretation. Not through tradition. But through the composer’s own hands. 🎹 Sergei Rachmaninoff 🎼 Performing his own music More than a century later, the voice of the composer still speaks. He himself said he was not the best interpreter of his own music; in his view, his original vision was closer to the playing of Horowitz, who lived long enough for us to have high-quality recordings…

Knowing this is the first piece he wrote from coming out of depression is everything.

🥰 It’s interesting how Rachmaninoff keeps everything moving. There is none of the almost self-indulgent, excessive rubato and contrived romanticism that we hear in so many concert performances today.

Hear how he doesn’t smash the keys? Beautiful ♡ it always bothers me when I hear people play this piece, but they smash the keys in this part. Like. Bro! That’s not that this emotion sounds like. That’s not what Love sounds like! It sounds like this! It sounds soft and beautiful 。゚(゚´Д`゚)゚。 like, I get it, emotions are high and the people are probably just excited, or they haven’t yet learned how to play soft like that (since it’s really hard to do, and to make it sound good) but still! I get to dislike it, even though I understand it. This version, and any version that manages to play this softly, is so much more beautiful and so much more superior.

I had the album “Rachmaninoff Plays Rachmaninoff” going one holiday when my uncle was over and he paused talking as one piece started, shook his head, and said “oh this is way too fast” and I was like WELL LET ME TELL YOU A THING

Good lord this is so much better than what we hear people do these days. Like a ballet duet that's totally weightless.

Everyone’s got their own opinions and interpretations of what sounds best to them. I love rach playing this because it’s his music telling his story. Everyone else’s interpretations are telling their own stories in his music. We should celebrate the differences, not be pedantic over small changes

There are recordings that used new technology to transfer their papyri to a modern piano, with recordings like Liebesleid that sound incredible and are available on Spotify and YouTube.

My late uncle Bill, otherwise known as Dr. William R Ward, was the dean of music at San Francisco State and was a formidable pianist and composer in his own right. Guess who his hero was? Yes! Rachmaninoff! He had his picture on the wall in his studio.
