Art historian here - it’s not plastic! Enamel is glass and one of the oldest forms of jewelry ornament on earth 🥺 I don’t like the color… but it’s a beautiful artisanal process and I think it’s actually really cool that they are using a historic technique on a piece that is already inspired by medieval architecture.

So allegedly, this has actually been in the works for quite some time. The original plan was supposedly to use pink rhodonite, but that stone naturally has a lot of variation in color, veining, and pattern, making it nearly impossible to achieve the level of consistency Van Cleef requires for mass production and after the absolute madness surrounding this year’s holiday pendant, they wanted to capitalize on the pink craze while it was still at its peak, so they pivoted to pink enamel instead. To me, what’s fascinating to me is that Van Cleef is clearly self-aware enough to recognize that too much variation in a natural stone—even when it’s completely normal and not a quality issue—could discourage buyers. Yet they’re apparently willing to replace a natural gemstone with enamel to achieve visual uniformity. They’re clearly prioritizing commercial appeal over the craftsmanship and authenticity that made these pieces timeless in the first place.

I’m a jewelry designer and it’s not plastic. It’s real vitreous (glass) enamel and it’s labor intensive. I’ve worked in both glass enamel with 18k and resin enamel with plated brass and they are very different processes. They show these new pieces being polished with a wheel that would melt plastic cold enamel (resin). They describe their special glass technique, but unfortunately the color and material reads cheap. The Alhambra motif has been knocked off to the point that it all looks mass market.

This is such an interesting case study because, like, enamel work is fussy and producing glass this colour of pink is both fussy AND expensive (it uses real gold to get the hue, as any stained glass artist knows because we can’t afford it). This piece would have done absolute NUMBERS in past centuries because of how bright and difficult it is to make. HOWEVER, because of this, stuff like this wasn’t really made in the past and so in the present we associate this look with cheap modern artificiality, even if historically this would have actually been a very expensive and prized piece of jewellery. I can know all of this intellectually and still on a gut level it reads plastic to me 😭

They could’ve found gemstones this color, tourmaline, rhodolite garnet, even pink quartz? I’ve never liked this style anyway but they are straight robbing people now. Gold and plastic? Who knew 🤷🏻♀️
