I guess it could help in preventing you from accidentally ejecting the card? Since it's where your hand might be resting, you could accidentally push on it, causing the game to eject. That's just my theory

When the 2DS XL released I had to get one sadly I didn't finally buy one until the end of the life of the 3DS being sold at retail. I still only paid $200 CAD for mine but still it was expensive even then for a used 2DS XL.
