SHOULD YOU BELIEVE A PASTOR WHO TELLS YOU, “IF YOU GIVE, GOD WILL MAKE YOU RICH”? “The more you give, the more God will bless you. Give your money to God, and He will make your business prosper and help you earn more.” If someone tells you this, do not rush to give them your money. Because the Bible never teaches giving as a transaction where “the more money you give God, the more blessings He must give you in return.” 2 Corinthians 9:7 says: “Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.” Notice this: God wants willing, cheerful giving—not giving motivated by the desire to get rich. If someone thinks: “God, I’m giving $100 today, so You must help me make $1,000.” Is that still simply about loving God? No. At that point, giving has turned into bargaining with God: “I give You money; You give me blessings.” To put it more plainly, that is no longer worshiping God. It is using God to satisfy our own desires. The Lord Jesus also warned: “Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” — Matthew 6:24 If outwardly we are giving, but inwardly what we really want is, “How can God make me rich? How can He give me more?” then what do we truly love—God, or the money we hope He will give us? God searches the heart. If giving is only a way to demand more blessings from God, treating Him like an investment opportunity, then giving driven by greed and a transactional motive is not pleasing to God. Of course, this does not mean Christians should not give. True giving comes from gratitude to God, love for God, and a willingness to support the work of the church and help those in need. Even if God does not make you wealthy in the way you imagined, you are still willing to worship Him. So the next time someone tells you: “Give more, and God will help you make more money.” The question is not: “How much do I need to give to become rich?” But rather: “Did the Bible really promise that? Am I giving because I love God, or because I am trying to make a deal with Him?” Do not try to buy blessings with your giving, and do not treat God as a tool for satisfying your desire for wealth. You may be able to deceive other people, but you cannot deceive the God who searches the heart.
