@blk.table.talk: Angela Bassett has been one of the most powerful and consistent forces in Black Hollywood for over three decades. She has portrayed Betty Shabazz, Tina Turner, Rosa Parks, Queen Ramonda, and Katherine Johnson among others. She is an Academy Award nominee, a Golden Globe winner, and one of the few Black actresses to have built a sustained career at the highest levels of the industry without compromising her dignity or her identity. She said this at the 2026 American Black Film Festival Honors while accepting an award and every word of it lands differently in the current political climate. The Trump administration has spent its first year and a half systematically defunding Black cultural institutions, dismantling DEI programs, gutting voting rights protections, cutting federal programs that disproportionately support Black families, and using the machinery of the federal government to erase Black history from schools, museums, and public memory. Angela Bassett is not speaking abstractly. She is describing something specific and coordinated. Her answer to it is the one Black artists have always returned to when the world tries to make them invisible. Keep telling our own stories. Show the power of our individual and collective journeys.
