@claragig: I finally tried Obsidian for a second brain so you don't have to 🧠 It looks great, but underneath it's the plain folders already on your laptop. Save this before you download another app
#obsidian #secondbrain #aiforbeginners #ai4beginners #claudeai
obsidian second brain, do you need obsidian, plain folder structure, AI note taking, portable AI setup, second brain, ai tools, ai memory

it does more. obsidian also searches your content with an ai approach without, on your computer without exposing your data to the large LLMs like OpenAI. Obsidian is also more simplified for use as local memory for Claude Code, saving token spend.

so true - obsidian is just a harness for managing files. It just has features to help manage the infrastructure. 1. Obsidian can update wiki links automatically if you rename or move a note 2. Obsidian CLI will give graph awareness - better search ability 3. Gives you a searchable graph and an organized way to view your notes that's pretty much it

honestly just takes a lot of passes to get it right, but staleness and confidence weighting alone is amazing, it's wild because you can prompt it with 100 sample questions and watch as it literally grows new connections between things and gets smarter. it's not easy and scaling it takes extremely disciplined intake rules but I do think it's awesome when it gets going. but strict ingestion rules are a must or it will all get lost in the sauce

I feel like there is a way to make it useful if you have a large enough dataset but most projects don’t have a real need. If you’re thinking 2nd brain then this would be a general purpose store of all information related to your specific environment.

You keep it also simple in obsidian. Yes it’s a hype but it’s useful

The whole second brain is over hyped just cause Karparthy published how HE uses obsidian. now we have all these hybrids and clones when really you don't need it

my experience is, that it uses less tokens since the obsidian cli is faster and more efficient. reading and writing works better keeping index and cache consistent. if you use your second brain to interact with it directly obsidian is better human readable and the wikilinks help navigating. All these things are very helpful when having a huge database. but in general I agree. most of your every day work can be accomplished without using obsidian.

exactly, I tried this, and it was like adding friction instead of simplify the process, looks nice, but the simplicity is the priority for me

Also you can tell your agent to build a vault on your harddrive and structure it the same way. My problem with obsidian is the data residency. I don’t want my data going to a third party if not necessary.
