@everyday_dog_trainer: TEST YOUR DOG & COMMENT THE RESULTS ….. Your dog literally learns in pictures. The position you’re in when you teach a skill becomes part of what your dog believes that skill actually is. Take “sit” for example. Most pet dogs don’t think “sit” simply means “put your bum on the ground.” They think it’s an entire event: run in front of the handler, look up at them, and then put their bum on the floor because that’s exactly how the behaviour has always been taught and reinforced. Without realising it, we set our dogs up to fail. Later, when you’re sitting at a café table or on the couch and you ask your dog to “sit,” they don’t respond. Most people assume the dog is being stubborn or disobedient. The reality is very different…. Your dog doesn’t actually understand the cue in this new picture. They can’t get in front of you like they usually do, and you’re not standing the way you were during training. To your dog, it almost looks like you’re asking for something completely different. That’s why it’s so important to practise every skill from different positions standing, sitting, kneeling, with your back turned, and from different angles and environments.
