They found corn dogs, Dorito tacos, fries, loaded nachos, Domino's pizza, and breaded chicken. Breakfast: Froot Loops, Lucky Charms, doughnuts, sprinkle-filled pancakes, and cinnamon buns. One serving of blueberry bread served at an elementary school contained 24 grams of added sugar — more than most candy bars. Schools are the busiest restaurant in America. They're serving fast food. Ultra-processed foods now make up nearly two-thirds of the calories consumed by American children. Lunchables — engineered by Philip Morris using cigarette science — were added to the National School Lunch Program in 2023. Consumer Reports tested them and found lead at 74% of California's maximum allowable dose, phthalates in all but one kit, and sodium levels covering half a child's daily limit in a single 3.2-ounce pack. A retired NYU professor of nutrition called them "ultra-processed junk foods for kids." After a Washington Post investigation revealed that Kraft Heinz spent years lobbying to lower government nutrition standards to get Lunchables onto school trays, Consumer Reports petitioned the USDA to remove them. Kraft Heinz pulled them in November 2024. A bipartisan bill — the Healthy Lunch for Healthy Kids Act — has been introduced to ban ultra-processed foods from school cafeterias entirely.
