Aside from the rumination in the feelings of the breakup, social media also gives you access to your ex’s new relationships and stuff that was unheard of in old times. Like the ability to see date night photos or even just the obsessing over the changes in their following and unfollowing lists is so unhealthy to have access to. And it’s SO normalized to keep up with that stuff. It concerns me a great deal that everyone has normalized this lowkey creepy behavior, under the assumption that everyone is of sound mind and there’s no risk of harm in doing this kind of thing. I feel like an alien sometimes when I tell people I make a conscious effort to not keep up with that stuff, not because I’m some perfect person but because I know that keeping tabs on your ex makes it harder to truly move on. Yes, even if you’re just doing it to make fun of them yk?

has anyone noticed that when you get into a happy relationship the algorithm switches to videos along the lines of “we were so happy then he died” or “he cheated” and when you are dealing with a breakup its like the complete opposite…? its like its trying to cause psychosis

I had to break out of the taxi cab theory videos. I think that theory can be really toxic. It’s a tough pill to swallow, but your ex may love somebody more than they loved you and they may never want to get back with you.

I think it feeds these kinds of things when you’re in a relationship too. For a while I was getting sooo much content about people being cheated on or finding out about how they had been cheated on. I wouldn’t be surprised if they know exactly what you’re insecure about in a relationship and feed you more of that lol.

Also, there’s some research in language psychology where your social media activity can actually predict your breakup (in some cases). Similar to how some algorithms can predict pregnancy bc of changes in behavioral data, breakups can function similarly. I worked in a language lab examining this issue 5ish years ago, it’s fascinating

I had this happen with a friendship breakup/platonic falling out. I got so many “don’t worry you’re the good guy and the other person is an emotionally immature narcissist” pop psych therapy speak vids. It scared me to consider the ex friend was getting them too. 😬🫤

I finally had to deactivate Facebook because the algorithm decided that, because I followed a couple animal rescues, that meant I wanted to see nonstop photos of animals rescued from horrible neglect. It was a literal hellscape. Obviously you see something horrible, it stops you from scrolling out of shock, and the algorithm rewards it
