NOTAMs are a part of pilot daily life; we read hundreds of thousands of them over our careers. Understanding how to read them including WHEN they’re active is imperative to proper preflight planning. Part of that understanding is knowing exactly how to translate to and from Zulu and the differences between standard time and daylight time. Remember, standard time is happening now (from November to March); to get from Zulu to local time you will subtract 5 hours for eastern time zone, 6 hours for central, 7 hours for mountain and 8 hours for pacific. Example: 1700 Zulu = 10 MST (mountain standard time) For daylight time (March -November) we spring forward, yes? We spring forward one hour as well, meaning the time you will subtract from Zulu for eastern local is not 5, but 4. Converting from Zulu to central is now 5, not 6 and then 6 for mountain and 7 for pacific.
