it doesnt erase everything all at once. thats the cruelest part. it leaves them lucid enough to watch themselves disappear. they become a ghost in their own home. in the end it, takes their words. then it takes their ability to swallow, to walk, to control their own body. It is not just forgetting. It is being erased while they are still alive, until there is nothing left but the shell.

my mom was diagnosed with alzheimer’s when i was 9, it’s been so hard for me to help her take care of her at such a young age when i needed taken care of myself. there have been times where ive cried myself to sleep knowing that my mom is slowly forgetting me, and recently the doctors have said in about 1-2 years she will forget almost about everything. i’ve been praying that doesn’t happen because i would want her to remember me in the slightest bit when i graduate which is 2030. i know that it’s a long stretch but that’s all i’ve ever wanted, for mom to be proud of my and see me walk across the stage.
