「ミュージカルには行ったことがあるのですが、オペラとどう違うのですか？」という質問をよく聞かれます。 元々ヨーロッパで発展したくオペラ＞の中の1つのジャンルに、オペラよりもややカジュアルで、セリフや聴きやすいナンバーが並ぶくオペレッタ＞があります。 それがアメリカに渡って、さらにダンスやショー的な要素が加わり発展したエンターテイメントがくミュージカル＞です。 僕がこの7月に指揮するのは、ワーグナーが作曲したオペラ「さまよえるオランダ人」ですが、ミュージカルとの一番大きな違いは、非常に大きな編成オーケストラが生で演奏すること！今回のオランダ人では、オーケストラピットと呼ばれる舞台手前の穴倉のような場所に60人を軽く超えるオーケストラが配置され、僕もそこで指揮をしています。 舞台上で繰り広げられる一流の歌手によるアリアや合唱もオペラの魅力ですが、 今回はピットから、序曲のリハーサルを少しご覧いただきたいと思います！ オーケストラの演奏会とはまた違った迫力を劇場でぜひ体感してみてください！！ I'm often asked,

Opera originally developed in Europe, and within that tradition is a lighter genre called operetta, which features spoken dialogue and more accessible musical numbers. When operetta crossed over to America, it evolved with the addition of dance and show-style elements into what we now know as the musical. This July, I'll be conducting Wagner's opera The Flying Dutchman. The biggest difference between musicals and opera? The full-scale live orchestra! In this production, we'll have a 60+ member orchestra positioned in what's called the "orchestra pit," a space below the stage, and I'll be conducting right there. While the powerful arias and choruses performed by world-class singers on stage are a big part of opera's charm, today I'd like to share a glimpse of the overture rehearsal from the pit.
