There's a decade where almost nobody can touch your money Between 55 and 71 your brackets are the emptiest they'll ever be The window doesn't reopen. Most people sleep through it. The video "around 20 percent, depending on your province." Here's the actual spread, because the gap is wider than a rule of thumb can carry. Lowest combined marginal rate on ordinary income, 2026: Ontario 19.05. BC 19.60. Alberta 22.00. Nova Scotia 22.79. Quebec about 25.7 after the abatement. So a Nova Scotian melting down the same amount as an Ontarian pays almost four points more on it. Still cheap. Not the same cheap. Two things worth adding. The federal bottom rate is 14 percent for 2026, down from 15, which means every non-refundable credit is now worth 14 cents rather than 15. Small, and it moves the arithmetic on basically every retirement calculation you'll see quoted from before this year. And BC moved its bottom rate to 5.60 percent in Budget 2026, up from 5.06, so any BC figure you're reading from last year is slightly stale. The 44 to 53 percent I mention later is the OAS clawback zone, not the plain top bracket. That distinction matters. Those are the rates on dollars that arrive while the government is taking 15 cents back on top of your ordinary tax. And the honest limit on all of this. It only works if you have a real RRSP to drain and genuinely low income in those years. Still working full time at 60? The window hasn't opened yet. The principle is national. The number is yours, and it depends on your province and your other income.
