Hundreds of Rohingya refugees gathered in Camp-8W on Friday during the visit of the U.S. Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, holding placards and calling for a voluntary, safe, dignified, and sustainable return to their homeland in Myanmar. The demonstrators urged that any future repatriation must guarantee full citizenship, equal rights, justice, security, and international protection for the Rohingya people. They emphasized that the conditions necessary for a safe and sustainable return have not yet been established. During the peaceful demonstration, participants appealed to the United States to take stronger diplomatic and international action to help end the ongoing persecution and violence against the Rohingya in Myanmar. They noted that the U.S. government was the first to officially determine that the atrocities committed against the Rohingya constitute genocide and called for continued leadership in pursuing accountability for those responsible. The protesters stressed that justice and accountability are essential prerequisites for any lasting solution to the Rohingya crisis.
