A 59-year-old New Jersey man who murdered his brother, sister-in-law and their two children was sentenced today to four terms of life in prison without the possibility of parole. A jury in February convicted Paul Caneiro of all 15 counts against him, including four counts of first-degree murder. Judge Marc C. Lemieux told him this morning (Tuesday, May 19) that he is no longer Paul Caneiro. "You are an [inmate] number in the Department of Corrections. You are a quadruple murderer who slaughtered innocent children. That is your identity. That is the identity you will carry for the remainder of your life behind prison walls, confined to a four foot by seven foot cell until your final breath. That's the sentence I'm imposing," Lemieux said. The judge said Caneiro's address "will forever be the Department of Corrections." "His only reality is confinement, consequence and accountability. Punishment is paramount, and the court imposes it without any hesitation. While defendant will not acknowledge his behavior and wrongdoing, a jury of his peers did, and this court now imposes a sentence that fully reflects the verdict and the gravity of these offenses," Lemieux said. "Although more than seven years passed before this matter reached trial due to COVID pretrial litigation and the complexity of these proceedings, justice delayed is not justice denied." Prosecutors say Caneiro shot and stabbed Keith Caneiro, 50, his wife Jennifer, 45, and their daughter, 8-year-old Sophia, and son, 11-year-old Jesse, on Nov. 20, 2018, in Colts Neck, New Jersey. He set fire to his brother's home, then set fire to his own home to try to make it look as though the killer targeted them both. The brothers owned a technology company together and were arguing about money when the murders occurred. #law #crime #court #judge
