the reason is because they are using their walmart app to avoid having to pay a certain percentage to all credit companies. they cut the middle man so more money goes to the company rather then credit card companies.

You can technically do tap to pay, but you have to download the app and then put your card on the app and then once you’re paying it will pop up QR code you scan the QR code and then you can use tap to pay

So according to an employee at a random Walmart - the processing companies to do tap use Amazon tech and they don’t want to pay Amazon or anyone else.

They did it for a reason, they don’t want to pay the fees for Apple Pay, it was worth them making their own so they can collect user data and Apple Pay fees are almost a billion they would pay yearly

also if you put your phone number in when you use your card you never have to put it in again and you don't get paper receipts any more which really pisses the front door receipt checkers off
