Wildlife engaging in…recreation is more common than you might think in the natural world. From stealing opioids to eating magic mushrooms, these animals are nature's junkies. It seems teens will be teens no matter the species. Juvenile dolphins like to get together and get blazed. They force a pufferfish to inflate, deliberately exposing themselves to the fish’s highly potent toxin. What would be deadly for us only results in a...higher consciousness experience for the dolphins. But there’s more questionable behaviour going on. Tasmania, Australia has the world's largest legal opium farms. The problem is that humans aren’t the only ones benefiting. Red-necked wallabies raid the farms, eat the poppy heads and enjoy the resulting dazed buzz. And sticking with magic plants, the hallucinogenic Yage vine isn’t just used by locals. If you saw a jaguar eating a plant, you’d be a bit confused. But the big cat forgoes its fierce carnivorous nature for something…more laidback. The bark is basically catnip for this giant kitty. Coffee is often referred to as the saviour of humanity. Or maybe that was just me saying that. And we’re not the only ones who need a caffeine hit it would seem. Bees drinking nectar from the coffee plant reenergise, making them more likely to perform their “waggle dance” for the hive, communicating that good nectar is nearby. And while coffee is certainly my vice, this final one is my all-time favourite. Reindeer love to eat the Amanita muscaria mushroom, which has hallucinogenic properties just like magic shrooms. The problem is that the mushroom is highly toxic to us and consuming it the way the reindeer do would be dangerous. So there was an easy solution. Feed the reindeer the mushrooms and then drink their laced pee to get that sweet high.
