You can never go wrong with just upping the stat that your class needs most- INT for Wizard, DEX for Rogue, etc., or taking one of: Tough (higher max HP), Lucky (free advantage in stuff), Mobile (move further on your turn), or one of the ones that raise a stat you care about by 1 (Athlete for Fighter, Actor for Bard, etc.)
