Spanish soldiers were deployed to restore order in the city after an influx of people that prompted growing calls for Spain’s temporary exclusion from the European Union’s visa-free Schengen travel zone. It is estimated that up to 60,000 Moroccans arrived in Ceuta in 24 hours, encouraged by a ruling from Spain’s supreme court that those who swam into the city could not immediately be turned back.
