@placesoftheplanet: Extreme Places of the World Oymyakon is a remote village in the Sakha Republic of eastern Siberia, Russia, and is widely recognised as the coldest permanently inhabited place on Earth. Home to around 500 residents, the village recorded an official temperature of −67.7°C in 1933, while winter temperatures below −50°C remain common for long periods. Its extreme climate is caused by a combination of high latitude, continentality and topography. Oymyakon sits in a valley where dense cold air sinks and becomes trapped beneath warmer air above, creating a temperature inversion that allows the cold to intensify. During winter, daylight can last as little as three hours, while the ground remains permanently frozen due to deep permafrost. Despite these conditions, life continues as normal. Vehicles are often left running to prevent their engines from freezing, schools usually remain open unless temperatures fall below around −52°C, and many buildings are constructed on stilts to reduce the impact of thawing permafrost on their foundations. Oymyakon is one of the most remarkable examples of human adaptation to one of Earth’s harshest environments, proving that even the most extreme climates can support permanent communities. i think you must add Yakutsk. It's only 5 degrees higher there, but almost 700k people leave in these harsh conditions, i think it's at least interesting

I love learning about this region! There’s a YouTuber from Yakutia who posts about life in Yakutsk and these surrounding rural areas and she’s even posted about nomadic reindeer herders who still live in the traditional way

why should any sane person want to live there? No amount of money is worth living in such permanent squalor..
