There are many westernised Muslims who drink alcohol yet would never commit these kinds of crimes, so how can this be described as a uniquely British problem? And does the death penalty actually prevent people from committing crimes? I don’t believe the evidence shows that it does. I think the reason there is such a strong public reaction is that, while people recognise these offences also occur within the white community, there is often a perception that it is especially shocking when someone comes to another country and commits them. Some people feel that, having been welcomed into a country, abusing that hospitality makes the offence seem even more serious. We all know abuse can happen within families and behind closed doors. However, entering someone else’s home and committing abuse after being welcomed in is often viewed as a different kind of betrayal. I also think many people in the West assume the issue is linked to Islam because they believe, rightly or wrongly, that some interpretations of the religion treat Muslims and non-Muslims differently. Whether that perception is accurate or not is a separate discussion, but it is one reason some people reach that conclusion.
