@cap_abyss: Commissioned in December 1941, the IJN Yamato was the largest and most heavily armed battleship ever built, displacing over 72,000 long tons and armed with nine massive 18.1-inch main guns designed to dominate surface combat across the Pacific. Although she served as Admiral Yamamoto's flagship during the Battle of Midway, the rapid shift toward carrier-based naval aviation left Yamato largely in reserve until her final, desperate mission on April 7, 1945—Operation Ten-Go. Sent without air cover on a one-way suicide strike to attack the Allied invasion fleet at Okinawa, Yamato was intercepted in the East China Sea by over 300 U.S. carrier aircraft from Task Force 58. Bombarded continuously for over two hours and struck by at least 11 torpedoes and 6 heavy bombs, her aft ammunition magazine detonated in a colossal explosion whose smoke plume rose thousands of feet into the air, sinking the flagship along with nearly 2,500 of her 3,332 crew members and marking the definitive end of the battleship era. #yamato #battleship #navy #History #edit
