On one end, you have young founders who feel enormous pressure to prove themselves, to keep up with their peers, chase accolades, and demonstrate profitability, sometimes at the expense of their integrity and reputation. On the other end, you have Sam Altman, who has no qualms about his company’s financial success (or lack there of) ahead of an IPO and recently closed the largest funding round in Silicon Valley history. I’ve seen a lot of spiteful takes about the Phia situation online. While I believe it’s worthy of criticism—fraud is always wrong—it’s also clear that many people were eager to see Phoebe Gates fail. Watching from the sidelines, they seemed to be waiting for her to mess up as a form of schadenfreude. There’s far more to this story than the headlines suggest. When you consider the timeline of when the bug was discovered versus when the company raised funding, along with the fact that the Phia extension captured sensitive user data, the situation becomes even more troubling. Was this an oversight because neither Phoebe nor Sophia are technical founders? Or was this deliberate, given the autonomous nature of the cookie stuffing instructions embedded in Phia’s code? Still, I gain nothing from tearing anyone down. My goal is simply to bring a different perspective to the conversation and encourage us to think critically about how we move forward. Given their backgrounds, I doubt Phoebe and Sophia will face any serious repercussions. But one thing is for sure, they’ll likely have a difficult time re-entering the fashion tech space, at least in front-facing roles. They’ve damaged the trust of a community that depends on credibility, authenticity, and taste. Will they shut the company down and return investors’ money? Will we see lawsuits in the coming years, whether a class action or claims from large affiliate platforms like ShopMy and Capital One Shopping, which appear to have been affected? How significant is the damage, and what happens next? A word of encouragement to all the founders out there, especially the female founders like myself: nothing can stop an idea whose time has come! Don’t look at the competition. Keep your blinders on.
