you're missing the BIG fact that before british raj rule, India was the richest country in the world. The brits stole roughly 45 trillion dollars of wealth in todays money from India. We would have been far more advanced if it wasn't for them.

India was closed off for 50/70 yrs its been independent because of the hangover of colonialism and hence reluctance to engage with the west. it made no progress in that time and is only beginning to pick up growth.

There’s a lot of progress. When British sucked every resource in the subcontinent there was nothing much to rebuild the country. It went through a lot and its 5th largest economy today and huge improvements.

The problem with India isn’t the scale of the hurdles. In the 80ish years after their independence they’ve achieved so much like it’s not even close to what the US has achieved. The biggest challenges they face are all societal everything from the corruption, just pure laziness of government officials again from corruption, lack of respect for one another and you can see this in how they dispose of their own trash and also how they treat lower income people. This also stems from their caste system. Even though they say they don’t have a caste system it is still 100% in place. India is also pushing extremely heavy to be a Hindu first country and while that’s great and all the way they are doing this is quite extreme and could be consider at the level of Apartheid but rather than racial segregation it’s religious segregation.

I think a small point you forgot to mention, is also a fundamental one - economic historians, most notably Angus Maddison, estimate that in the early 18th century (around 1700), the Indian subcontinent accounted for about 23% to 27% of the world's GDP. By the time the British departed in 1947, India’s global economic share had plummeted to around 3% to 4%. The British drained India from nearly all its wealth, effectively starting from zero. We can waffle on about culture, language, blah, blah, blah - but, the crucial issue is what state the British left such a rich country.

There were external factors too. Britain and the US sanctioned India as they thought India was turning communist. Britain also failed to pay back billions in promised debt.

The deepest problem was the wrong political system overlaid on a diverse nation. The Indian political system essentially required any ruling party to focus on a unified voting block. Across states, there were sharp cultural divides on top of ancient and complicated societal layouts. A culturally unified nation could have focused on rolling out municipal services as a unifying measure. Unfortunately, the logistical hurdles made a unified municipal plan impossible, and prohibitively expensive. That is why you do not see strong sewage, trash, and power infrastructure in most places in India. Politicians instead leaned into identify politics, which divided the Indian populace, but made holding power far easier.

The big shame is how China with a similar size population has managed to excel over the last 6 decades & rebuilt their own infrastructure, manufacturing & military to managed to get poverty & hunger under control, better water quality & healtcare.
