Back-to-school season. You just dropped $200 at Target and your first instinct is to photograph the receipt, upload it to the app, and ask for their half. Stop. Go read your order first. Base child support is generally designed to cover housing, food, and basic necessities. Unless your order specifically addresses school supplies, extracurriculars, or uninsured medical, they're not obligated to split it โ€” and "I pay child support, that covers it" is a defensible answer. Not a kind one. A defensible one. Here's why that matters more than the $200: every unenforceable demand you send creates a record of you initiating conflict over something you have no right to. Ten of those messages don't get you reimbursed. They get printed out and handed to a judge as evidence that you're the difficult one. If your order doesn't cover it โ€” don't send the receipt. You're not conceding. You're refusing to hand them a free win. If your order DOES cover it โ€” send it clean. One line, receipt attached, no commentary: "Attached is the receipt for school supplies totaling $200. Per our order, your half is $100. Please send by [date]." That's the whole message. No "since you never." No "I shouldn't have to ask." No explaining why the kids needed the supplies. Brief, informative, friendly, firm โ€” and then you stop typing. Your order is the strategy. Your feelings are not evidence. Inside the Custody Warrior Collective, I walk through how to read your order like the strategic document it is: what it actually obligates, what it doesn't, and where the leverage sits. Comment COLLECTIVE and I'll send you the link.
