An activist has divided opinion after claiming the Notting Hill Carnival is an “embarrassment to black culture”. In a video posted on Instagram on Monday, Virginnia Logan, said that she felt compelled to speak out about the London carnival that celebrated its 60th anniversary over the long weekend and resulted in 636 arrests and the death of a man who fell in a canal after being pursued by police. “I have to say this today, because it’s just gotta be said,” the Christian activist said in the video which has been widely shared across social media where it has divided opinion. “As a black person, I’m embarrassed and ashamed of Notting Hill Carnival. Notting Hill Carnival does not represent black culture. It’s an embarrassment to black culture because what happens on those streets at Notting Hill Carnival is nothing but atrocities and lewdness.” Ms Logan went on to say what “annoys me even more is you get people calling themselves Christians”. “Yesterday you were in church raising your hands, worshipping Jesus and today you’ve got your batty riders on doing all sorts of atrocities; wearing your bra on the street. Do not call yourself a Christian,” she said.
