Kate and Edwina were both noble, I think they are from their mother's first marriage to another nobleman. They were both properly introduced to society and sponsored by Lady Danbury- also, Edwina was recognized as the diamond of the season by the Queen herself. Sophie's issue is related to her status as a bastard too, because she was born out of marriage (and her mom was not noble) so her father claimed her to be a ward (like Lady Danbury did with Simon bc his parents were dead). If her father was still alive, she would've been introduced correctly to high society and would've been able to marry him with no issues as ward back up by her family count name as a sponsor (counts title come after dukes as importance) and an appropriate dowry. However the step-mother didn't liked her, knew about her bastard status and made her do lowly works as a maid + never introduced her to high society, took away her dowry and kicked her out- my girl had absolutely nothing on her side beside Benedict and Bridgerton kindness.

Even if Kate isn’t by blood related to a upper family, Edwina was and Kate got status becouse of the status Edwina got from the queen and she wanted any engagement to be approved by Kate. Secondly, it was quite a public love story, a big wedding that got cancelled and than a reason for it was love, somting that fixes the most in bridgerton

Mary Sharma is noble by birth, and a former diamond, also her parents hold titles. Thus, is addressed as "Lady Mary" by the ton even though her husband was a merchant, while not as respected they were still higher up the social ladder if one have to compare them to maids. If it weren't for Mary "connections/ties" Neither Edwina nor Kate would have been accepted in society. Also while Kate has no ties to nobility, Edwina does. Her grandfather is an Earl and also had agreed to provide her a dowry. Thus, attracting suitors. Kate was accepted due to Mary being her mom and Lady Danbury's influence. Sophie on the other hand, while she also has half "noble blood" like Edwina. Her mother was a maid, and her father took her in as his ward not as is daughter (so already alienating her from the ton). But she gets educated and all. But due to her step mom kinda "demoting" her (let's say that). She is now no longer part of society as she was pushed to the background as a maid. So now her status is a maid (extremely low on the social ladder). So now for Benedict, even though he is the "spare" he's still part of society even though he is just a "Mr." he's still expected to marry a "lady". So Sophie was out of the question as she was a maid and had not been introduced into society and also (the main thing) was an illegitimate. If you actually see, all of Sophies problems is caused by the evil step mom and her spineless father who couldn't stand up for his own daughter.

My understanding is that the nobility consists of those who hold titles, and everyone else is simply part of high society. Perhaps their father was part of high society but of very low status, and Lady Mary, she was indeed the daughter of nobles and had connections. And let's not forget that both Edwina and Kate were legitimate children born within a marriage. Sophie was illegitimate, born to a servant, someone who didn't belong to high society, and an Earl. Furthermore, they weren't married. It was already unacceptable that her mother was a servant, her illegitimate status only worsened her position.

people in the comments explain very well but I think it's also because the father of Kate is in a good caste in India (he was working for the royal family so is upper the common people) so even Kate is a respectable match due to the fact she's legitimate

The Sharmas are of upper class, even tho they have no title they are a respected family and lady Mary was also a friend of lady Danbury if I remember correctly. Sophie was born out of wedlock to a servant and an earl who never recognised her as his own daughter, and as such (+bc she’s a servant) she is the bottom of english class ladder. It’s pretty expalantory in the series.

leonie.fste :
Sophie was born out of wedlock, and her father never publicly acknowledged her, it is common knowledge that noblemen are not permitted to marry servants a rule that applies to Kate and Edwina's situation. Mary, Edwina's biological mother, is of noble birth and married Kate's father who is neither wealthy nor noble while Kate was born legitimately from his first marriage. Edwina was born of the union between Mary and Kate's father. Although Mary married beneath her station leading to her ostracization by both society and her family she and her daughter Edwina were nonetheless of legitimate noble lineage and thus held in high regard; furthermore, they benefited from the influence of Lady Danbury, a highly respected figure in society. Moreover, no one knew that Sophie was a lord's illegitimate daughter, as she had lived her life as a servant.

Both of them were of noble blood and were legitimate daughters. Sophie was born illegitimately and was a maid.

For one, the Sharmas were being sponsored by Lady Danbury. Two, despite not being Lady Marys biological daughter, Kate is still from legitimate origins because both of her parents are from the same social class, whereas Sophie is illegitimate because her father was noble and her mother was a maid. They were also unmarried. This makes Sophie different from Edwina, who was born into wedlock despite her parents being from two different social classes.

Kate may not have been nobility, but she was legitimate (her parents were married when she was born). Sophie on the other hand was the illegitimate child of an earl and a maid
