Doctor Strange's spell is a spell of suppression. The memories are hidden deep inaccessible to conscious recall. It is more off a mental block than a deletion. The neural pathways are still there. Jean inadvertently weakened the spell when she was deep in their minds, just like accidentally weakening the mental barrier between Savage Hull and Banner. Think about why MJ was crying while under mind control. She should not have been exhibiting independent emotion but something broke in her, allowing fragments of her past to resurface.

This movie, hits me back the most. Grieving till today. When MJ said , “ I don’t even know you” it shattered me. If i were peter parker, i would put on a fake smile and pretend nothing happens but my soul left my body.
