@km_news: Leadership, Respect, and the Responsibility of Public Office Written By Kendesi Mohammed The words of national leaders matter. They influence public confidence, shape political culture, and help define the relationship between a government and its citizens. When a senior public official uses language that many people perceive as disrespectful, it can deepen political divisions and weaken trust in public institutions. In May 2025, Guyana’s Vice President, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, came under criticism after stating during a press conference, “This country got some really stupid people, really.” The comment generated widespread public debate and criticism from opposition politicians, members of the media, civil society organizations, and many ordinary Guyanese. (Kaieteur News) Regardless of the context in which the statement was made, many Guyanese believed the language was inappropriate for someone serving in one of the country’s highest elected offices. Leadership carries enormous responsibility, and many citizens expect their leaders to speak with patience, respect, and professionalism, especially when addressing people who may disagree with government policies. Democracy depends on open debate. Citizens have the right to question their government, criticize policies, support different political parties, and express opposing viewpoints without feeling that they are being insulted by those entrusted to lead the nation. Strong leaders do not simply lead those who agree with them. They also lead those who disagree with them. They inspire confidence by listening, explaining their decisions, and engaging in respectful dialogue rather than allowing political disagreements to become personal attacks. Guyana stands at one of the most important moments in its history. With significant oil revenues, expanding infrastructure, and growing international attention, the country has an opportunity to build a stronger economy, create more jobs, improve education, modernize healthcare, and strengthen institutions for future generations. Achieving these goals requires national unity. Political disagreements will always exist, but mutual respect should remain constant. Government officials, opposition leaders, business owners, journalists, and citizens all share a responsibility to elevate the quality of public discourse. In my opinion, public officials should avoid language that can be interpreted as insulting the very people they were elected to serve. Leadership is not measured only by policies and achievements, but also by character, humility, and the ability to unite people during times of disagreement. History often remembers leaders not only for what they accomplished, but also for how they treated the people they represented. Respect for citizens should never be viewed as a weakness. It is one of the strongest foundations of democratic leadership. #Guyana #DrBharratJagdeo #BharratJagdeo #Leadership #Respect

The only time we must cry is if we lost our salvation with Christ when Jesus will say I know you not go into the lake of fire and I'm sure Odessa has her salvation unlike you
