These artists need to give their spaces to other artists when they pass. The Boomer generation really needs to start passing down instead of pulling up the ladder. For the generations behind them.

For all the people who envy these Artists: would you like to move into a place with no heating? No comfort? Dark and cold? These people renovated their spaces with little money and worked hard.

If any of them own the spaces , & care about the spaces staying with artists- they should draft contracts to be put in place that in the future only artists can rent the space & that the rent stays controlled. If they’re all renting, the city needs to come through, actions people!

They did what they could for their art and for their time. Old industrial spaces turned into homes and community. Happens all over the country. Area becomes desirable, $ moves in. Artists pushed out. Rinse and repeat.

Please keep in mind when the artists took the lofts originally, it was not a desirable place to live. People saying they should give it up to younger artists miss the point. It’s the struggling artists who can move into undesirable areas and make it somewhere special. Then people with money want to move there and younger artists are priced out.

These people stayed in nyc through the 60, 70, 80 and 9/11 and covid. They legit deserve it. I mean nyc is popular now but there was legit a time when New York City was bankrupt and beyond dangerous.
