I sent this text to my girls when I started my first job (yes I looked it up): "Guys, I started the new job on Monday, my brain is completely fried, and I've forgotten my desk neighbour's name three times. Is it normal to want to nap at 2pm?" I wish I could give past me a hug and yes hun, it is entirely normal. A hill I am willing to die on as a career coach is that the first three months in a new job are some of the most exhausting, identity-stretching times of your working life. In a modern workplace that moves at warp speed, you face complex digital systems, ambiguous matrix structures, and shifting targets from day dot, and as a result, the self-imposed pressure is huge. And I get it, you want to instantly prove your worth and you want them to think, 'How did we ever survive without them?' But thing is, trying to be the perfect employee from day one is an almost impossible task because, whilst you are absolutely wondeful, you are one person. You cannot control everything right now, you are being given A LOT to handle and quite literally everyone, whether they've been working for 5 minutes or 15 years, finds it hard to make that transition. So if you are starting a new job, my career advice is this: instead of aiming for perfection, focus on what you can control this week.
