@sirkollexzy1000: MARYAM BABANGIDA: THE FIRST LADY WHO REDEFINED THE OFFICE 🇳🇬 Many Nigerians remember Maryam Babangida for her elegance, poise, and iconic head ties, but her greatest legacy reached far beyond fashion. Born Maria Ndidi Okogwu on November 1, 1948, in Asaba, she became Nigeria's First Lady after Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida assumed power in 1985. At a time when the office of the First Lady was largely ceremonial, Maryam transformed it into a platform for national social development. After visiting rural communities and witnessing the challenges faced by women, she launched the Better Life Programme for Rural Women in 1987. The initiative encouraged women's cooperatives, cottage industries, vocational training, farming, markets, and community development projects, creating new economic opportunities for thousands of rural women across Nigeria. Her advocacy also inspired the establishment of the Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women's Development in Abuja, an institution dedicated to research, training, and the advancement of women. Few people remember that during the failed Gideon Orkar coup attempt in April 1990, Maryam Babangida and her family were inside Dodan Barracks as the attack unfolded. They survived one of the most dramatic moments in Nigeria's political history. Maryam Babangida passed away on December 27, 2009, after battling ovarian cancer. Yet, her influence remains one of the most enduring legacies of any Nigerian First Lady. Through her advocacy, leadership, and vision, she permanently changed public expectations of what the office of the First Lady could accomplish.
