Also, why are we policing dress codes before addressing the financial mismanagement that plague HBCUs across the board. The university’s executive officers get enormous salaries but they can’t seem to find the money to accommodate students either disabilities. They can’t make university facilities accessible but somehow there’s always university money that can’t be accounted for.

This is so correct. But having the conversation within marginalized groups about how we are not always inclusive to disabled people is not something we really get into.

I went to University of IL at Chicago and while it was somewhat accessible, it would lose all of that in the winter because no shoveling was properly done and you couldn’t get to certain buildings even if they were.

As a Black Deaf Disabled college professor I can absolutely confirm this. Colleges and Universities a lot of them aren’t accessible including the so called Special Needs colleges. I have worked in PWI, HBCU, and private and ALL them weren’t accessible for me nor for their students. Whenever I bring up the lack of accessibility to any of the institutions I worked at they ignored me and dismissed me.

The inclusion act in my country (Scotland) means you can’t build a new buisness without it being disability inclusive since 2010 thankfully.

A friend of mine had to use a wheelchair for a few months because she suffered a pulmonary embolism and couldn’t walk until she recovered. One of the main buildings where all of the science labs were, had a wheelchair lift at the front of the building, but it was not functional when she tried to use it. She went to talk to the assistant Dean about it, who very cheerily explained to her that “ this college is very self selecting and it’s not for everyone! I’m sure students who need that type of infrastructure will go somewhere else” completely ignoring the fact that she was a student who needed that infrastructure, which is why they were meeting at all

Another issue these HBCUs have but they’re trying to set a standard, a dress code barring bonnets and damn durags… campus isn’t accessible tho, which probably means they don’t offer many accommodations.

This! I genuinely had to explain to my classmates that the building that held all of the classes on disability/disability related topics only had one entrance that was made to even be semi-accessible. In all of the years I attended that university there was never a point where all of the accessibility features worked in that entrance.

It’s interesting because I’ve been hearing a whole other discourse about HBCU and the divine nine I’ve been hearing white people say that MLK Jr. was in a cult with the most famous imperialists. 😭 I think white people really need to be careful about how we talk about these topics.

I literally went to a university where the building I had classes on didn't have accessible bathrooms since there was no way for disabled people to get into the building. (they did have accessible bathrooms in buildings that were accessible to wheelchair users)

Muskingum Uni is a beautiful campus... If you can do 20+ stairs multiple times per class or in some cases huge hills without ramps... it's unreal the level of "You don't belong here" You see when you HAVE to see it
