Christian Warlich operated out of a pub in Hamburg’s St. Pauli district for over forty years, tattooing more than 50,000 clients. His customers included Prince Axel and Prince Viggo of the Danish royal family. He called himself the King of Tattooists. He also removed tattoos, and the method he used was unlike anything documented elsewhere. Warlich’s removal technique caused tattoos to detach from the skin in one piece. He collected the removed pieces in a box. Some of those pieces still exist today, held in the collection of the Tattoo Museum Varkhaus in Finland. The method eventually drew the attention of the Hamburg Health Authority, and Warlich was required to submit his formula. The document he handed over listed the ingredients: one teaspoon of distilled water, one teaspoon of ether, four to six lumps of potassium permanganate, a small pinch of table salt, and two and a half teaspoons of arsenic-free sulphuric acid, added slowly down the side of the glass. The mixture burned on contact. Once cooled it remained usable for about six weeks, after which a fresh batch was made. The formula sat in the historical record until art historian Dr. Ole Wittmann uncovered it as part of his funded research project on Warlich’s estate, conducted in cooperation with the Museum für Hamburgische Geschichte. A pharmacist remixed it from the original document and confirmed that it worked.
