People love to glamorize trial work. TV makes it look like dramatic objections, perfectly timed speeches, and lawyers walking out of the courtroom feeling victorious every single time. But what people don’t see is what a murder trial actually feels like for everyone involved. After spending the last week and a half in trial, emotionally invested every single day, there’s no switch you can flip at the end of the night to just “turn it off.” You carry the testimony home with you. You carry the photographs, the emotions in the courtroom, the tension, the weight of every decision, and the reality that real families are sitting there living through the worst moments of their lives. One thing people misunderstand about criminal defense attorneys is that representing someone accused of a serious crime does not mean you are blind to tragedy or unaffected by it. Quite the opposite. You see the pain of the victim’s family. You see the devastation of the defendant’s family. You see human beings on both sides whose lives will never be the same again regardless of the outcome. There is rarely a “winner” in cases like these. The job is not about celebrating crime or pretending bad things didn’t happen. The job is about making sure the Constitution is followed, the process is fair, and that every single person — regardless of the accusation against them — is given the defense the law promises them. People often ask what the hardest part of being a criminal defense attorney is. It’s this. The emotional weight. The responsibility. The pressure of knowing that what happens inside that courtroom will permanently affect multiple families for the rest of their lives. Trial work is not glamorous. It’s exhausting, consuming, and incredibly human.
