@just_mary_being_mary: I retired early at 54, and for the first few months, I felt like an absolute fraud. I thought I'd be instantly relaxed. Instead, my body was vibrating with anxiety and totally knackered. We have to realise that untangling ourselves from a lifetime of deadlines and cortisol takes real time. Recovery doesn't look like a glossy travel brochure, sometimes it just looks like resting.
I envision my retirement not having any schedule- resting after 36 years in Corporate.

I was a police officer/detective for about 15 years and It was pure hurry up and wait, cortisol, fight or flight , never stopping and mind always running like the clappers. once I realised I was going to die young if I kept it up I put everything into my side hustle and right now I'm able to make ends meet with that. but I hope I'm able to eventually stop being so stressed and learn to stop. it's weird. when I'm around people I'm like a humming bird, stressed. but on my own I'm happy in my own company and happy to do nothing. I think it's a matter of extremes and learning what works for you. still get the anxiety sometimes but the crazy restless legs has gone at least

the trick to this is to start "retiring" while your working. that's how you can down the stress, when you stop caring and dont get involved with the politics, laugh it all off the stress just goes away. plus you get paid. im 54 now and if I get fired or redundant I really couldn't care less, I have nothing to lose.

I dropped to 3 days a week for 2 years before retiring this year at 68. I’m 6 months in and the thing I enjoy the most is an afternoon nap 😂

I packed it in at 60. Because there are graveyards full of people who was sure they would be missed or bored !

I’m 60 and would love to be able to swap places with you… I will be 69 when I’m able to retire due to my mortgage. I love your openness and honesty but be grateful for the opportunity you have 😏

Retirement is chasing shadows, when the dinosaurs are not chasing you anymore your life has no purpose, and life without purpose is completely pointless. I hope the dinosaurs never stop chasing me, I'm 63,working full time 👌

I retired early last year at 59. I just couldn’t do it anymore. I had to unplug from the matrix. I wanted my life back. There are more years behind me than ahead of me. I had given too much. When I retired I slept in and couldn’t pull my self up. It’s been months and that’s OK. Everything felt like an effort. All those early mornings waking up at 4:30 for almost 40 years took its toll. I don’t want to be around people now. I don’t have to have pointless conversations and office niceties to people you don’t like. I am happy now. I am living life at my own pace. It’s ok that I haven’t gone wild and have done fantastic things. I am on my own time and it’s Ok.

Very relatable. I retired at 58 from a highly stressful job in corporate banking. Over the last 2.5 years there have been many days when I’ve effectively done nothing. I regularly have stressful dreams that I am back at work. Your description of it being like recovering from a toxic relationship is spot on.
