@deeperarchive: Also known as Sturmtruppen or “assault troops”. This position was used to carry out stealthy primarily nighttime operations into no man's land. They would use trench raiders to help gather information disrupt enemy lines and capture needed prisoners. Operating primarily during the Caporetto Offensive or the Twelfth Battle of the Isonzo in October of 1917. They were equipped with signature Austro-Hungarian steel helmets and paired with bulky gas masks for chemical environments. Their uniforms were stripped of anything shiny or rattling like belts and loose buttons to ensure silent movement through no man’s land. #History #photography #ww1
