Even brands like LA Apparel pretend to be ethical by saying their workers get paid no less than $17.25, when the minimum wage in LA County is $18.42 💀. They also cap their worker's wages as $25 an hour, when the living wage in Los Angeles is $27+ for a single adult with no children.

Honestly I think it predates SHEIN because the “Made in China” suspicion has been heavily going around pre-SHEIN; personally the roots probably have to do with western (specifically American induced) xenophobia in order to “protect” domestic businesses and western economic integrity, which is very relevant after the rise of China as the main competitor of the US and supplier in production chains globally. Since China is seen as an economic “threat”, the image that is spread in the US and Europe will be one that is degrading, to entice people to focus on local industries and be more skeptical of foreign countries — many of which are slowly starting to replace western dominance in the market and politics

I think it’s just xenophobia and leftover thinking. Japanese manufacturing used to be look at with a similar stigma but now it’s the peak of manufacturing. Stigma takes a long time to die but I believe it’s turning a corner with china

There's good stuff that's made in China but there's also so much junk. There's absolutely zero quality control and no trustworthy brands due to how they handle trademarks. Something being made in China doesn't automatically mean it's junk but it's a good clue.
